Multinational Pharmaceutical Company: Appointment of Chief Legal Officer

The Mandate

Marsden was engaged to lead the global search for a Chief Legal Officer (CLO) for a US-headquartered multinational pharmaceutical company. The introduction originated from a longstanding relationship between our founder, Jonathan Marsden, and a leading US life sciences and healthcare M&A partner. Recognising Marsden’s strong connectivity across both private practice and in-house legal markets—and our track record working with many of the same organisations— the partner introduced us to the company’s CEO.

Initially seeking remuneration advice, the CEO invited Marsden to participate in a competitive pitch process to appoint the company’s next CLO. We secured the mandate based on our blend of senior in-house and private practice expertise and our extensive international network – a clear advantage in global CLO searches.

The Challenges

The company was undergoing a period of rapid global transformation and required a CLO capable of partnering closely with the executive team to guide the business through change. The ideal candidate needed exceptional technical capability, leadership presence, and energy, as well as the judgement and influence to drive better outcomes in complex litigation. Additionally, cultural awareness and a nuanced understanding of the company’s country of origin were essential.

The Process

The search was led by Karen Glass, who drew on Marsden’s extensive network and deep market relationships to identify and engage high-calibre candidates quickly. The successful candidate was appointed Chief Legal Officer and joined the company less than six months after Marsden was engaged.
